United sign Afolabi

United add Afolabi ahead of Ayrshire Derby

Ayr United have today completed the signing of striker Jonathan Afolabi on loan from Celtic until the end of the season.

The 21 year-old, who has Championship experience from spells with Dunfermline Athletic and Dundee, goes straight into the squad for tonight’s Ayrshire derby.

Manager David Hopkin said:"I am absolutely delighted to sign Jonathon for Ayr United Football Club. He is a striker I have wanted to get before but had to be patient. He is a player I have always been interested in as although he is young and still learning the game he has pace, power and a great left foot."

Born and raised in Dublin to Nigerian parents, Afolabi played his youth football with Shamrock Rovers and St Joseph's Boys before earning a move to the Premier League club Southampton. In 2019, Afolabi joined Celtic, signing a three-year contract which was extended in September 2020 until the end of next season.

Jonathan made his senior debut in February 2020 on loan at Dunfermline Athletic and scored two goals in six appearances for the Pars before the COVID brought the season to a premature end. Last season,he made 22 appearances for Dundee, finding the net on four occasions including at Somerset Park in April.
