Super Thursday

David Hopkin has further strengthened his squad ahead of the 2021/22 season with the signing of three new players. Sean McGinty and Markus Fjørtoft make the switch from Greenock Morton while Nick McAllister joins from St. Mirren.

The manager said:"Obviously I know Sean and Markus very well and delighted to be able to get them to come here. I met Sean as soon as he left Partick to get him to Morton as he is a very experienced left sided Centre back. He has height, physicality and is a huge presence in the dressing room. Markus also has that physicality and has been a big part of Morton's good defensive record. He is someone that we can trust and also has improvement in him.

Nick is a great signing for the Club as there were many other clubs in for him and he has a really bright future. He can play in a variety of positions across the back 4 and also in the centre of midfield. We watched him several times for Dumbarton last season and he stood out, ability wise he is well beyond his years. Delighted to get him signed up for 2 years."

Sean McGinty

Moving to Somerset Park after a season-and-a-half at Greenock Morton is 27 year old central defender Sean McGinty.

Born in Maidstone, Kent, Sean began his professional career with Manchester United, progressing through the Red Devil’s youth academy as part of the side that won the 2010–11 FA Youth Cup before signing a pro contract in the summer of 2011. Sean made a number of loan moves as a youngster before finding regular first team football in the National League with Aldershot Town.

Standing at 6ft 5in, McGinty moved north of the border in 2018 when he signed for Partick Thistle from Torquay United and was a regular for the Jags in the Championship before making the switch to Morton in January 2020. A Republic of Ireland youth internationalist, Sean wore the captain’s armband at both Firhill and Cappielow.

Markus Fjørtoft

Also a central defender and aged 27, Markus Fjørtoft completes a hat-trick of former Morton players rejoining David Hopkin at Somerset Park. Son of former Norwegian striker Jan Åge Fjørtoft, Marcus was born in England and followed his father into professional football via a four year stint playing playing college ‘soccer’ at Duke University in North Carolina.

In 2018, Markus was selected 45th overall in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft by Seattle Sounders FC and in 2019 signed a one-year contract with Hamilton Academical via a spell in New Zealand and a successful trial with the then Premiership club. In September 2020, Markus left Hamilton Academical to join Greenock Morton after making 12 appearances for the Accies.

Markus and Sean played 21 matches together for the Ton last season, losing just five and helping the side to 8 clean sheets.

Nick McAllister

20-year-old Nick joined St Mirren from Queen's Park in 2019 and made his senior debut for the Buddies in a Betfred Cup tie against Albion Rovers at the start of the 2019/20 season. After featuring for St. Mirren’s U20s in the Challenge Cup, he went on to join the Wee Rovers on loan for the second-half of the season, making 8 appearances for the Coatbridge club in League 2.

Last season saw McAllister earn further first team experience on loan at Dumbarton, where he helped the Sons retain their League 1 status, fending off Stranraer and Edinburgh City in the play-offs.

Nick impressed in a number of positions for Dumbarton including right-back and in midfield and is also comfortable at centre-back.

We will have interviews with all 3 players on Black & White TV later today.
