East Kilbride 1 – 1 Ayr United

By Karen Malcolm

The Ayr United Reserves travelled to K Park in East Kilbride to take on East Kilbride Reserves in the SPFL Reserve League 2. Ayr were without their top goal scorer, striker Mark McKenzie, who has signed on loan to Forfar Athletic in League 1 for the remainder of the season. Brian Connor, who is a regular for the Under 18s and has been part of the reserve squad this season, started up front for Ayr. Ayr’s winger Gabe Skeoch was also in the starting line up having made his debut for junior team Glenafton on Saturday, where he’s on loan for the remainder of the season.

For the first 25 mins of the game both teams created chances as Ecrepont, Smith and Murpy all played great balls into the box and East Kilbride’s number 7 and 10 had their shots cleared by the Ayr defence.

Ayr gained the lead 26 mins into the game when Connor took a shot from the edge of the 6 yard box which was saved by the East Kilbride keeper but Skeoch met the rebound and fired it into the net.

East Kilbride were forced into a substitution after the goal as their keeper had to go off injured and was replaced by the sub keeper. The teams went in at half time with the away team having a 1-0 advantage.

The teams came back out for the second half and East Kilbride responded quickly. 9 mins into the second half East Kilbride’s number 8 scrambled the ball over the line.

East Kilbride made a substitution 4 mins later as number 15 replaced number 2 and Ayr made their first substitution of the game 6 mins later when Goma replaced Connor.

East Kilbride came close to taking the lead in the game after 65 mins as their number 11 took a shot but he was denied by a great save from Hare-Reid.

East Kilbride made a double substitution in the 72nd min when number 12 and 14 replaced 11 and 3. Ayr made a substitution 12 mins later as Heaney replaced Smith. Ayr came close to gaining a late winner when a ball was played into the box in the 90+1st min but Goma’s header went just over the bar.

The result means Ayr United remain second in the SPFL Reserve League 2 (P11 W7 D2 L2 GD21 PTS) and they are 3 points behind Livingston, however Ayr have a game in hand over the league leaders. The Reserves are next in action on Monday 16th March as they take on BSC Glasgow. The game is at Townhead Park, Cumnock and kick off is 8pm.
