Ayr United Reserves welcomed Queen’s Park Reserves to Townhead Park for their second Reserve Challenge Cup game of the season. Ayr went into the game without left back Finn Ecrepont who was away with Scotland’s Under 18s, but they still had a very strong squad with Grant Thorburn slotting in at the left back position

It only took Ayr 8 mins to take the lead after a corner into the box by Curtis was headered into the top right corner by McKenzie.

For the rest of the first half both teams had several good chances with Heaney, Skeoch, Miller, Connor and Hewitt all coming close to scoring for Ayr and Griffiths, Whitmore and McGuire all creating chances for Queen’s Park.

The teams went in at half time with Ayr having the upper hand with a 1-0 lead.

For the first 15 mins of the second half Hare-Reid made a number of good saves for Ayr and Griffiths was a solid block in the Queen’s Park defence.

Both teams made changes 60 mins into the game with Queen’s Park Trialist No 11 swapped for Trialist No 12 and Ayr’s Heaney replaced by Goma.

11 mins after coming on, Goma was shown a yellow card alongside Griffiths after they locked heads following a collision at the edge of the box.

Ayr doubled their lead 72 mins into the game when Queens’ keeper Crawford came out of his net to try and stop Goma, but the United substitute took the ball past him before scoring from a very tight angle.

Queen’s Park then made a double substitution with McDonald and Trialist No 2 being replaced by McQuade and Rodger. Ayr also made a substitution 6 mins later when Connor was replaced by McKee.

There was little further goalmouth action in the latter part of the game and when the final whistle was blown, Ayr had won the game 2-0 and taken all 3 points.
