Reserves – Airdrieonians 2 Ayr United 1
By AU Media
On Monday this week, Ayr United Reserves travelled to the Penny Cars Stadium in Airdrie to take on Airdrieonians Reserves in the SPFL Reserve League 2.
Both teams created a few early half chances, but the first real chance didn’t come until 20 mins into the game when Ayr were awarded a free-kick after a foul on Smith. McGuffie took the free-kick but it went just wide of the post.
8 mins later the home team took the lead after a corner into the box was cleared by the Ayr defence, but Barrowman picked the ball up at the edge of the box and fired it into the bottom left corner of the net.
Airdrieonians went in at half-time with a 1-0 lead over the Honest Men.
Ayr United came back out after half-time and responded in 4 mins. Murphy got past a number of Airdrie players and made his way into the box where he took his shot that went past the keeper and into the bottom right corner.
The first and only booking of the game came 62 mins in when Barrowman was shown the yellow card for a foul on Smith. Ayr made their only substitution of the game when Smith was replaced by Goma, 5 mins later.
Airdrie were forced into their first substitution on 72 mins after the injured Burke had to be replaced by Kavanagh. Airdrie then had several shots on target, but all were stopped by fantastic saves from Hare-Reid.
4 mins before full-time, Airdrie were awarded a penalty following a foul in the box. Roy stepped up and scored to give the home team the lead again. United had a mountain to climb and time was fast running out.
Airdrie made their second substitution on 92 mins as they wound down the clock, with Leighton going off to be replaced by Walker.
A disappointing result for the reserves who had looked to have done enough to have gained a point up until the late penalty.
