Ayr United vs Queen of the South

SPFL Championship Saturday 17th October 2020.

On Saturday, Ayr United kick-off the 2020/21 Championship season with the visit of Queen of the South to Somerset Park. United sat in fourth place in the table when a trip to face Queen of the South on Friday 13th March – and eventually the remainder of the season – was halted because of the Coronavirus outbreak and will again be looking for a promotion play-off spot in this season’s truncated competition.

The Honest Men go into tomorrow’s games on top of Group G in the Betfred Cup after narrow wins over Albion Rovers and Annan Athletic and a narrow defeat last Saturday at the hands of Hamilton Accies.

Opposition : Queen of the South have started the season with three consecutive draws in Group G of the Betfred Cup. Connor Shields and Stephen Dobbie scored in a 2-2 draw against Morton at Cappielow in their opening fixture, with the Doonhamers taking the bonus point after a successful penalty shoot-out.

Their first home game saw them race to a two-goal lead against Premiership side St. Mirren with Shields again and Aidan Fitzpatrick on the scoresheet but the Buddies came back to tie the match late on and went on to win the shoot-out. On Tuesday night, League 1 side Partick
Thistle held out for a goalless draw in Dumfries despite having Brian Graham sent off in the 36th minute and the Jags were able to take the bonus point after Gregor Buchanan, Willie Gibson and Nortei Nortey all missed their spot kicks for the home team.

It has been a huge season of upheaval at Palmerston Park with no fewer than 14 new faces brought to the club by manager Allan Johnston. Striker Connor Shields returns to Scottlish football via Aldershot after moving from Albion Rovers to Sunderland in 2018 and has
already made an impression, as has youngster Aidan Fitzpatrick on loan from Norwich City after his move south from Partick Thistle to the Canaries in the summer. Another player to watch is young left-back James Maxwell. The 18 year-old is on loan from Rangers, having earlier been part of the Ayr United Youth Academy set-up.

Team News : Tom Walsh and Dario Zanatta miss out with injury.

The Manager Says:

It will be a tough game, Queens are looking in decent shape so far and will be well organised. It is two sides taking on each other with pretty new squads and we are delighted with the players we have got in and how we have started so far. It feels great to be saying that we start our League campaign tomorrow after so long without it. Every single one of us is hugely looking forward to it, the first game of a new season is always special and although things will be different tomorrow it is still 3 points that we want to make sure are ours.
