Morton | Match Preview | 26/03/22
Following back to back defeats against the division’s top two teams, Ayr United travel to Greenock to face Morton with both teams looking to gain a relegation worry-easing victory. With six games to go the sides are separated by just three points and a win for United on Saturday would pull them level on points with their opponents.
Set pieces were to prove costly for Lee Bullen as United fell to defeat against Arbroath last weekend. Front man, Jack Hamilton nodded home the only goal of the game from a corner to leave the United gaffer frustrated by the defending on show. The travelling faithful will be hoping to see their side stand firm on Saturday as Ayr languish just three points above 9th and six points above 10th in what Bullen says is a “six game season”.
Opposition
Morton have experienced an upturn in fortunes since the appointment of rookie manager, Dougie Imrie. They’ve only lost once in their last five games – beating Partick Thistle twice - and come into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw away to Dunfermline last Friday night. Morton keeper, Jack Hamilton has made the most saves in the division this season and has nine clean sheets to his name with 5 of those coming since the turn of the year.
Team News
Fjortoft is available for selection following his suspension. Adeloye may be fit enough to make the bench today. Following his red card at Arbroath, Sam Ashford is suspended for the next two matches.
The Manager Says:
Head to Head
Ayr United wins - 66
Draws - 38
Morton Wins – 56
Ayr have failed to beat Morton so far this campaign with two draws and a defeat. 2011/2012 was the last season Ayr failed to record a win against the men from Greenock (when in the same division).
Last Meeting: Morton claimed a 2-0 victory last time round. A Gavin Reilly brace with a goal either side of the interval was enough to earn a deserved victory at Somerset Park back in January.
Ayr Lined Up: McAdams, Houston, Baird, McGinty, Reading, Muirhead, McKenzie, Murdoch, Chalmers (Gondoh 61'), Maxwell (Bryden 84'), Adeloye( O'Connor 66’)

“Our focus is fully on Saturday’s game. Dougie Imrie has done a great job at Morton so far and we know it’ll be a tough game. Nothing is won and lost on Saturday but three points would put us in a really strong position moving forward.”
