Hearts U18 1 V 2 Ayr United U18

Friday 22nd July 2022

On Friday evening, Ayr United Under 18s travelled to Oriam in Edinburgh to take on elite side Hearts in a pre-season friendly. Ayr United won 2-1 thanks to goals from Max Guthrie and Brook Dreghorn.

Derren Fairs started in nets and had a defence in front of him that consisted of Dylan Watret, Aaron Weir, John West and CJ Johnston. A midfield made up of Scott Tomlinson, Bruce Strachan and Dario Viviani lined up in front of the defence with an attacking force of Ryan Kennedy, Jonathan McPhee and Max Guthrie in front of them. The Ayr United bench was made up of Brook Dreghorn, Shaun Donnelly, Trialist and Louis McPeake.

Hearts took the lead in the game in the 23rd minute when their number 10 stole the ball from Bruce Strachan and drove towards the goal and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.

Ayr United responded quickly and equalised 8 minutes later. Jonathan McPhee played the ball into the box which was brought down by Max Guthrie and the striker turned and put his effort into the back of the net to ensure his side went into half time on level terms.

Ayr United made their first substitution of the game 5 minutes before half time when Jonathan McPhee was replaced by Brook Dreghorn.

Ayr United started the second half strong and created a few chances in the first couple of minutes. Dario Viviani made his way past a number of players and into the box however his effort into the 6 yard box was gathered by the keeper and Ryan Kennedy’s effort from 20 yards out went just wide of the left hand post.

Ayr United made another substitution in the 58th minute when Bruce Strachan was replaced by Shaun Donnelly and then made a further substitution 6 minutes later when Ryan Kennedy was replaced by Trialist. This substitution saw Trialist go to the right centre back position while Aaron Weir moved to right back and Dylan Watret took Ryan Kennedy’s place on the right wing.

2 of the Ayr United substitutes saw their efforts go just past the post as Shaun Donnelly’s effort from 20 yards out and Brook Dreghorn attempt from just inside the box both went just wide of the right hand post.

Ayr United made another 2 more substitutions in the second half. The first saw Dylan Watret replaced by Jonathan McPhee and the second saw John West replaced by Louis McPeake.

The Honest Men got their well deserved winner in the 79th minute when Trialist played a great long ball to Dario Viviani. Viviani drove into the box and saw his effort saved at the bottom right corner by the Hearts keeper however Brook Dreghorn was there to put the rebound in to give his side the winner.

The game was a very high tempo game which was a good test for the Ayr United players as they gained more game time and their great team display resulted in them getting the win over their elite opposition.
