Ayr United 3 v 0 Darvel

Tuesday 28th June 2022

On Tuesday evening, Ayr United took on WOSFL Premier Division Champions Darvel at Inverclyde Sports Centre for a pre-season friendly. The Honest Men won 3-0 thanks to a goal from Andy Murdoch and a brace from Dipo Akinyemi.

9 of the 12 substitutes (Dario Viviani, Michael Hewitt, Finn Ecrepont, Mark McKenzie, Max Guthrie, Fraser Bryden, Dylan O’Kane, James Dolan and Kinlay Bilham) for Ayr United have came through the Ayr United Football Academy as well as Paul Smith, who started for the Honest Men. Lyle Avci, substitute goalkeeper for Darvel, is also a former Ayr United Football Academy player.

Ayr United came close to scoring in the 5th minute when Dipo Akinyemi made his way past a number of players and into the box however the strikers’ effort was tipped over the bar by the Darvel keeper. Akinyemi got his goal 5 minutes later when Jordan Houston intercepted the ball in the box and played it out to Ben Dempsey. Dempsey played it into the box and Akinyemi turned and put it into the net to give the Honest Men the lead.

Ayr United doubled their lead 2 minutes later when Daire O’Connor got the ball in the box. The Darvel keeper came out of his goal to block the winger from having an attempt on goal however O’Connor played the ball to Andy Murdoch who slotted the ball into the empty net from around 10 yards out.

7 minutes later and Ayr United had got their 3rd of the game. Sam Ashford made a great run down the wing and played the ball into the path of Paddy Reading. The left back crossed the ball into the 6 yard box and Dipo Akinyemi headered it into the net to make it 3-0 to the Honest Men.

Ayr United continues to create chances in the first half but the efforts were either denied by the Darvel keeper or the woodwork and they went into half time with the 3-0 lead.

The Honest Men made a number of substitutions in the second half. The first saw Andy Murdoch being replaced by Michael Hewitt, the second saw Sam Ashford and Sean McGinty being replaced by Mark McKenzie and Nick McAllister, the third saw Charlie Albinson and Dipo Akinyemi replaced by Aidan McAdams and Fraser Bryden, the fourth saw Paddy Reading and Daire O’Connor replaced by Finn Ecrepont and James Dolan and the fifth saw Ben Dempsey and Frankie Musonda replaced by Dario Viviani and Kinlay Bilham.

The Honest Men continued their positive attacking in the second half and continued to create chances. Dipo Akinyemi saw his effort from around 23 yards out saved by Avci, the Darvel substitute keeper, and his header go just over the bar. Mark McKenzie also saw his effort saved by Avci and Fraser Bryden header went just past the right hand post.

3 goals in the first 20 minutes gave Ayr United the victory over Darvel however the game was positive for both sides as it gave the players of both sides more game time to prepare them for the start of the 2022/23 season.
