On Friday evening, Ayr United Under 18s made the short trip up the road for the first Ayrshire Derby of the season. The Honest Men won 2-0 at Rugby Park thanks to goals from Lucas McRoberts and Max Guthrie.
Ayr United took the lead with 16 minutes on the clock. Shaun Donnelly did very well to pick the ball up in the middle and drive into the box. The midfielder then played the ball to Lucas McRoberts who darted past a few players before releasing a shot into the back of the net.
United then doubled their lead in the 35th minute when right back Dylan Watret played a powerful header into the box which was met by Max Guthrie who flicked the ball into the net from a tight angle.
Minutes before half time, Ayr United were reduced to 10 men when goal scorer Lucas McRoberts was shown a straight red card. In the 67th minute, Kilmarnock were also reduced to 10 men when Kian Leslie received his second yellow of the game.
Scott Tomlinson nearly scored a third for his side in the 76th minute when he made a great run into the box however the captains effort went narrowly past the left hand post.
Ayr United made 3 substitutions in the second half. The first saw Ryan Kennedy replace Aaron Weir and the second was a double substitution that saw Jonathan McPhee replace Max Guthrie and John West replace Harry Simpson.
A battling team performance from the Honest Men ensured they took all 3 points in the first Ayrshire Derby of the season and went into the Christmas break on the back of a positive result.
