Inverness Caledonian Thistle vs. Ayr United
Ladbrokes Premiership play-off quarter-final, 2nd leg
Saturday 11th May 2019. Kick-off 3pm
On Saturday, Ayr United take on Inverness Caledonian Thistle needing to overcome a two-goal deficit to keep our Premiership dreams alive. In a week of high profile European comebacks it is still all to play for but after losing the first-leg 3-1 on Tuesday, the first goal of the game could be vital. Ian McCall’s side will travel north today (Friday) and the Honest Men have a good record away from home in play-off football, losing just one of eight games on the road at this stage of the season.
Opponents:Only Falkirk won fewer home games (5) than Inverness in the Championship this term, with John Robertson’s men performing better on the road than at the Caledonian Stadium. On eight occasions, Caley were held to a draw, including United’s first trip to the Highland capital at the start of August. However, the scale of the Honest Men’s task is illustrated by the fact that have Caley been beaten by two or more goals at home just once this season, by Dundee United last month.
Team News: Steven Bell, Jamie Adams, Craig Moore and Andy Geggan are out with injuries.
Ian says: “Of course we would have liked the score to be different from the first leg but it is what it is and we know what we have to do. We have had some excellent away results and performances this season so this tie is far from over. We will have a big noisy support and if we get the first goal then it is very much game on.”
Head to head (at the Caledonian Stadium):
Ayr United wins – 1
Draws – 7
Inverness wins – 8
United’s only win against Inverness Caledonian Thistle in Inverness came in January 2003, Stewart Kean scoring the solitary goal of the game in the 3rd minute of the Division 1 encounter.
