Elgin City vs. Ayr United

Scottish Cup 2nd Round, Tuesday 23rd March 2021.

On Tuesday night, the Honest Men travel north to take on Elgin City in the second round of the Scottish Cup - 74 days on from the date the tie was originally due to take place.

Elgin City returned to competitive action on Saturday, losing 2-1 at home to Edinburgh City. The capital side raced into a two-goal lead after just 12 minutes and, although Elgin pulled one back before half-time, they were unable to get back into the match. The Borough Briggs side lie in third place in League 2, eight points behind leaders Queen’s Park.

City progressed to the second round of the Scottish Cup with a 4-0 home win over Civil Service Strollers on Boxing Day, their last competitive fixture before Saturday.

Team News

Aaron Muirhead misses the match through suspension and the game comes too soon for striker Andre Wright as continues his recovery from injury.

Brett McGavin’s loan deal has been terminated and the midfielder has returned to Ipswich.

The Manager Says:

We have been watching Elgin and they are a good footballing side, it will definitely be a tough game. For that reason we will be heading up there with an extremely strong side. It is all about progressing to the next round. The players have a long journey ahead of them however we have prepared them properly for it and it is another game we are really looking forward to.

Head to Head

Elgin City are out for a hat-trick of cup shocks over the Honest Men at Borough Briggs in just the third meeting between the sides.

In 1967, Division One United suffered a 2-0 midweek loss against the then Highland League club. More recently, following Elgin’s election to the SFL in 2000, City were again victorious over a visiting Ayr United side, winning a League Cup tie in extra-time. Steven McKeown opened the scoring in the 17th minute for Ayr but two Craig Gunn goals either side of half-time put City ahead. Aaron Connolly made it 2-2 and sent the game to extra-time only for Paul Miller to net the winner in the 112th minute.
