Dundee Utd match preview & information

Ayr United vs. Dundee United

Premier Sports Cup Second Round

Saturday 14th August 2021. Kick-off 3pm

On Saturday, the Honest Men host Premiership side Dundee United in the second round of the Premier Sports Cup.

We have progressed from the group stage of the League Cup in five of the last six seasons but have been halted at the second round stage by top flight opponents on three occasions. David Hopkin will be looking to go one better and reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2018.

Opposition

Dundee United begin life without striker Lawrence Shankland following the former Ayr man’s move to Belgian side Beerschot. The Scotland international scored 40 goals in 74 appearances for the Tannadice club, helping them to the Championship title in 2020.

Shankland was absent for Dundee United’s previous match: a stunning 1-0 victory over Rangers at Tannadice. Full-back Jamie Robson scored the only goal of the game that ended the Champions’ 40 game unbeaten run in the Premiership. United had opened the league campaign with a 2-0 defeat away to Aberdeen.

Thomas Courts was promoted to the role of Head Coach at Tannadice in the summer following the departure of Micky Mellon, who led the side to a ninth place finish last season. Courts, who previously managed Kelty Hearts, oversaw a perfect start to the Premier Sports Cup, recorded four wins out of four in the group stage, defeating his former club Kelty, Elgin City, East Fife and Arbroath.

Team News

Michael Moffat is a doubt with a calf injury, everyone else is fit and available.

The Manager Says:

Tomorrow is what football is all about, a Saturday cup tie against Premiership opposition and it is one we are all really looking forward to. There should be a great atmosphere inside Somerset and that can only help the players. Dundee United had a great result last weekend and will no doubt be full of confidence however we played well in the second half and finished the game really strongly so we are feeling good about the game.

Head to Head

Ayr United wins - 25

Draws - 13

Dundee United wins - 11

Dundee United have scored just once in their last eight visits to Somerset Park, a 6th minute Tope Obadeyi goal in a 1-0 win for the Tangerines in October 2016. Their previous win in Ayr was the last meeting between the sides in the League Cup, a 3-0 victory in 1986.

Last Meeting:

The last meeting of the sides saw leaders Dundee United travel to play third placed Ayr in the Championship in March last year. The Honest Men held the Tangerines to a 0-0 draw at Somerset, giving Robbie Neilson’s side a 16 point advantage over Inverness at the top of the table. Just one more match was possible before the league was halted and Dundee United declared champions.
