Ayr United wishes to comment on events which took place during the half-time interval at Saturday’s match v Turriff United.
As part of its partnership with the Ayrshire Youth Football League, the club has welcomed a number of teams to celebrate their on-field success at Somerset Park by presenting various trophies and allowing teams to complete a lap of honour in front of home fans, which has been very well received by all clubs from across Ayrshire.
Unfortunately, an adult from a local club took it upon himself to use this as an opportunity - not to celebrate his team’s success - but to incite a reaction from the home supporters, which not only contravened stadium and ground regulations but also put the young people in his care at unnecessary risk.
This will undoubtedly result in a change to the way trophy presentations are handled going forward which will be to the detriment of those who are recognised in the future however, Ayr United will continue to utilise its partnerships to engage with groups and young people from across Ayrshire, and won’t let the mindless behaviour of one individual deter us.
This has become a police matter and the club has been liaising with Police Scotland over the weekend and is continuing to assist them with their enquiries.
