Cammy Smith has become an Honest Man

The Honest Men have added to their squad ahead of Saturday’s trip to Inverness with the signing of forward Cammy Smith on loan from Dundee United until the end of January. 25-year-old Smith follows a well trodden path from the Aberdeen youth ranks to Somerset Park, via spells with St. Mirren and the Tannadice club.

Manager Mark Kerr said: “Cammy has a lot of experience at the top level. He has won the Championship twice and was St Mirren’s best player when they won it. He is an attacking player who can score and assist and he is technically very good. Cammy was playing for United earlier in the season however has recently not been getting a start and he is hungry to play and be involved. He is a great age and we are absoultely delighted to bring in a player of his quality.”

After coming through the youth ranks at Pittodrie, Cammy was handed his Aberdeen first-team debut at the age of 16 by Craig Brown in April 2012, coming on as a second-half substitute against Inverness Caledonian Thistle. His first senior goal also came against Inverness, an
equaliser in a 1-1 draw at the Caledonian Stadium five months later.

With over 75 Premier League appearances in five seasons with the Dons, including 22 starts, the 2016/17 campaign saw Smith head out on loan to the Championship, initially to Dundee United, where he scored five goals in 23 appearances before switching to St. Mirren in January, a deal which was made permanent when he signed a two-year contract to join the Buddies in May 2017. It was to prove a successful move for both player and club, with Smith named St Mirren’s player of the year in their Championship title winning season, with Cammy netting 10 goals in 34 league appearances.

Six months later he would swap the Premiership for the Championship when Dundee United paid an undisclosed fee to re-sign the player in January 2019 but Smith could only sit and watch on as the two clubs went head-to-head in the Premiership play-off final, the Buddies eventually avoiding relegation after a forgettable penalty shout-out in which United failed to find the back of the net.

Smith and the Tangerines would have to wait until last season to clinch promotion back to Premiership, albeit, the forward only made 10 appearances, nine of which came from the substitutes bench. Before Coronavirus called a halt to the campaign and Robbie Neilson’s side
were crowned Champions, Cammy had made the temporary switch to League of Ireland side Dundalk. Returning to Tannadice this season under new manager Micky Mellon, Cammy has made seven appearances but has been an unused substitute in the last seven Premiership fixtures and heads to Somerset Park looking for regular first team action.
