AUFC Burns Supper

The Inaugural ‘Honest Men and Bonie Lasses Burns Supper’ will take place in the Ally MacLeod Suite of Ayr United F.C. Having given the team its nickname, it seems only right that the club stages a Supper in honour of the town’s most famous son and our national bard. The club has organised an excellent array of speakers and performers.

The Immortal Memory will be proposed by the former Bridgeton Burns Club President, Charlie Newlands M.B.E. Charlie has spoken at some of the most prestigious Suppers throughout Scotland and is well known on the circuit for his funny and insightful tribute to Burns.

The Toast to the Lassies will be given by political speechwriter Neil Wallace. Neil, the brother of the former Deputy first Minister of Scotland, Jim Wallace, and a Liberal Democrat politician in his own right is a Principal Teacher of English in Dumfries and Galloway.

The Reply will be given by Fiona Hyslop MSP who is also currently Cabinet Minister for Culture, Europe and External Affairs. Ms Hyslop, whose mother is a past President of Ayr Burns Club, is steeped in Burns and is well known for a lively and entertaining reply that will have the gentlemen squirming in their seats!

Tam O’Shanter will be recited by Graham Hill who has performed Burns’ greatest work at Oxford University for the last 2 years. Graham is the current President of the Glasgow Haggis Club and has performed Burns poetry in both hemispheres and on both sides of the Atlantic.

Scots Poet, Donald Munro Graham, whose poetry is displayed in numerous bars in the west of Scotland, will address the haggis and regale the audience with some of his own poetic gems.

Husband and wife, John and Lesley Young, will be providing the musical entertainment on the evening. John is a former President of Dumbarton Burns Club and is a well-known performer on the Scottish folk scene, having previously performed alongside the Corries and Billy Connolly.
It all adds up to an excellent evening of entertainment!

The event will begin at 7pm on Friday 5th February and the ticket price of £35 includes a fantastic three course meal and a special gift for everyone attending. Tickets are on sale from the club shop now either by going into the shop or by phone on 01292 263435 ext 5.
