Arbroath | Match Preview | 30/07/22

Ayr United raise the curtain on the season 2022/23 tomorrow with the visit of last seasons runners up, Arbroath. Both teams faced contrasting battles until the wire last season but both Dick Campbell and Lee Bullen will have a renewed sense of optimism ahead of the new season.

After securing their Championship status on the final night of the previous campaign, Ayr will be setting more lofty ambitions for the forthcoming season but face a tough start to the season against Dick Campbell’s men. Gaffer, Lee Bullen will be looking for his side to start being more ruthless in front of goal after a goal shy Premier Sports Cup campaign.

Opposition

Arbroath were last seasons surprise package and took the title race until the penultimate game of the season against early season favourite’s, Kilmarnock. Dick Campbell’s men only lost five times in the league last year before being beaten on penalties in the Premiership play-off semi-final by fellow Championship side, Inverness. The Red Lichties have retained the nucleus of last season’s squad, however, have lost influential front man, Jack Hamilton.

Team News

Everyone is available for the league opener with the exception of David Bangala.

The Manager Says:

“We have been preparing for this game for a while and I am happy with where we are at. Results maybe didn’t go our way in the cup but I was pleased with the performances. We have spoken about the importance of a good start and being more clinical in front of goal but we know how tough the game will be. Arbroath will provide a really good test for us but we are looking forward to it and we are raring to get going in the league.”

Head to Head

Ayr United Wins – 53
Draws - 21
Arbroath Wins – 31

Despite the sides contrasting fortunes last season, the games between the two were fairly evenly matched with two draws and a win a piece.

Last Meeting: The last meeting between the two sides ended in a 1-0 win for Arbroath at Gayfield. Jack Hamilton scored the only goal of the game just after the restart as Ayr had Sam Ashford sent off 12 minutes from time.

Ayr Lined Up: McAdams, Houston, Muirhead, McGinty, Reading, McKenzie, Murdoch, McInroy, Maxwell (Bryden), Kenyon (Baird), Ashford.
