Ayr United vs Annan Athletic
Betfred Cup Group F
Tuesday 13th October 2020. Kick-off 7.45pm
On Tuesday night, The Honest Men’s home campaign gets underway when Annan Athletic are the visitors to Somerset Park for our first competitive fixture on home turf since the beginning of March.
After a strong performance but ultimately no points on Saturday away to Premiership side Hamilton, Mark Kerr’s side will be looking to get back to winning ways if they are to progress to the next round of the Betfred Cup. Also in Group F tomorrow, Albion Rovers travel to face Stranraer. Our final match of the group stages is next month when Stranraer are the visitors to Somerset Park on Saturday 14 November.
Opposition : Annan started their Betfred Cup campaign with a bang, defeating Hamilton Accies 3-1 at Galabank last midweek. They followed that result up with a home draw against fellow League 2 side Stranraer, who picked up the bonus point in the penalty shoot-out after
Greg Fleming saved from Annan’s Aaron Splaine in sudden death. Former United defender Peter Murphy’s side, however, remain top of the table in Group G after two matches and will be looking to cause another upset in the competition.
Team News : Striker Bruce Anderson has joined Patrick Reading on international duty with the Scotland U21s in San Marino. Tom Walsh remains on the sidelines with a knock picked up at Albion.
Mark says :”There were a lot of aspects of the performance at Hamilton that we were pleased with and we definitely felt we could have taken something from the game. Tomorrow night will be a completely different game, Annan will make things really difficult for us and we will be need to be at it right from the start to get the result we need. It is our first game at Somerset for a long time, we trained on the pitch today and everyone is really looking forward to getting out there.”
Head to head:
Ayr United wins – 2
Draws – 0
Annan Athletic wins – 1
Tuesday night is just the fourth meeting between the clubs in a competitive fixture and only the second since the Galabankies joined the Scottish Football League in 2008. There is a precedent, however, of Annan upsetting the odds: a second-half David Cox goal knocked
the Honest Men out of the League Challenge Cup at the quarter-final stage in September 2011.
Previous Meeting : The most recent meeting between the sides was a more straight-foward assignment for United. The League Cup group stage match in July 2017 saw Ross Docherty score in the first minute of a comprehensive 6-1 win. Craig McGuffie, Michael Moffat and
Craig Moore had Ayr up by four at half-time. Andy Geggan and Declan McDaid got in on the act in the second-half before Ryan Sinnamon’s late consolation.
Team: Hart, Geggan, Boyle, Higgins, Reid; Crawford (Ferguson), Docherty, McDaid,
McGuffie; Moore (Murphy), Moffat (Gilmour).
Match Officials :
Referee – Grant Irvine
Assistant Referee 1 – Stuart Stevenson
Assistant Referee 2 – Alan Grainger
