Albion Rovers vs. Ayr United
Betfred Cup Group F
Tuesday 6th October 2020. Kick-off 7.45pm
Tonight, after a wait of over 200 days, the Honest Men return to competitive action with a trip to Cliftonhill to face Albion Rovers in the first match of the Betfred Cup group stages.
After the premature conclusion of the 2019/20 season – and months of uncertainty – Mark Kerr’s new look side take-on Albion Rovers, Hamilton Accies and Annan Athletic over the next seven days before the start of the Championship season a week on Saturday.
New signing Bruce Anderson is among a host of new names set to make their debuts for United after a busy transfer window which saw eight new signings.
Also in Group F tomorrow, Hamilton Academical travel to face Annan, with Stranraer not in action until the weekend.
Opposition: The Honest Men will come up against a familiar figure in the opposition dugout tomorrow night as former United manager Brian Reid takes charge of his first competitive match as Albion Rovers boss.
The Wee Rovers occupied ninth spot in the League 2 table when season 2019/20 was brought to a halt, seven points ahead of Brechin City, despite losing their last five games before the end of season. Top goalscorer from last season, Declan Byrne, has moved on to Stirling Albion during the summer as did manager Kevin Harper.
Team News: Patrick Reading is on international duty with the Scotland U21s and will miss our first three Betfred Cup group stage matches.
Mark says: “We are absolutely buzzing to have a competitive fixture again. It has been a long wait and pre season has been tough for everyone but this is what we have been working towards. We were delighted to get Bruce in yesterday and he will go straight into the squad for tonight. The Betfred Cup is really important to us and although we won’t have our usual noisy away support we know that they will be at home watching.”
Head to head:
Ayr United wins – 54
Draws – 12
Albion Rovers wins – 31
The Honest Men have won the last five meetings between the sides and four of the five matches the teams have faced off in the League Cup.
Previous Meeting: Goals in either half from Alan Forrest and Steven Bell gave the Honest Men a 2-0 win when the sides last met, also in the Betfred Cup in July 2018. Following promotion to Championship earlier in the year, the Honest Men completed a clean sweep in the group stage of the competition, defeating Morton, Albion Rovers, Stenhousemuir and Partick Thistle, conceding just the solitary goal.
Ayr United team: Doohan; Ferguson, Harvie, Adams; Murdoch, Crawford, McDaid (McGuffie), Forrest (Kerr); Moore (Moffat), Shankland.
