Alan Murray Steps Down
As Alan Murray steps down from his role as Director of Ayr United, we reflect with deep appreciation on two decades of dedicated service to the club. When Alan joined the board in 2005, Ayr United was navigating through some of its most challenging financial times. With weekly survival a real concern, and even basic necessities like safety certificates for the main stand and floodlights uncertain, Alan’s calm determination and steady hand were invaluable.
Working alongside four chairmen, thirteen managers—from Campbell Money to Scott Brown—and numerous fellow directors, Alan has always put the club first. His behind-the-scenes efforts helped lay the foundation for a more sustainable and stable future.
Alan has been part of so many memorable highs, starting with his first match on 25th January away to Stranraer in the Scottish Cup—a 2-0 win that set the tone for many unforgettable nights. From the first Sky-televised home game at Somerset in 2006 to thrilling Scottish Cup moments like the 1-0 win in 2011 against Hibs (with son Nathan proudly mascot), Alan has seen it all. He witnessed playoff triumphs, promotion-clinching goals, and the rise of future stars, even watching a young Paul Pogba grace the Somerset turf.
Off the pitch, Alan has witnessed the recent transformation of the club’s infrastructure, from the Somerset Hub to the construction of the new North Stand. He was at the heart of the club’s centenary celebrations in 2010 and always cherished the opportunity to welcome legends like Billy McNeill, Kevin Keegan, Walter Smith, and Ally McCoist to Somerset Park.
Of course, football comes with its share of lows—relegation scraps and defeats to local rivals, even Auchinleck—but Alan never wavered. His loyalty, passion, and unshakable commitment to Ayr United Football Club have left a lasting legacy.
Thank you, Alan, for everything.
